How to incorporate 5 Mid Century styles into Modern Interiors

a sustainable building shown incorporating nature

In today's interior design landscape where sleek and minimalist aesthetics dominate, mid century style is gaining popularity. In fact, just recently we had to do a client project in a newly developed building downtown. This client had rented the space of the top floor penthouse in Montreal and was drawn to mid century styles. Everything eventually does come back in style, and so does this apply to furnitures and decor. Let's dive into some ideas I implemented for this mid century elements into a newly built penthouse. What is mid century? Well, the below will give you some examples of this style.

  1. Vintage Furniture

One of the easiest ways to infuse mid century style is through the clever use of furniture. I had to search for mid century pieces or actual vintage furniture that can seamlessly blend with the client's modern setting. Mid-century chairs with their iconic sleek lines, velvet upholstery, and tapered legs are particularly sought after. Vintage sideboards, dressers, and cabinets add both functionality and a touch of history to interiors. Restoring and reupholstering antique chairs, sofas or ottomans is an option as well. But for this client, I had to settle with Articles Timber Olio Sofa. Of course I had no choice but to pair it up with this beautiful walnut media unit

2. Retro Lightning

Retro lighting fixtures are another excellent way to introduce vintage charm into your modern spaces. Vintage-style floor or table lamps with timeless designs, like the Roche Bobois Nonette was a personal favourite of mine.

3.Wallpapers

Wallpapers and fabrics play a crucial role in capturing the mid century spirit. Choosing patterns, prints, and colors reminiscent of specific eras can transport your interiors back in time. Floral wallpapers, mod-inspired geometric patterns, or even classic damask prints can bring a touch of retro elegance to any room. For a subtler approach, opt for vintage-inspired textiles with a nod to the past - think chevron or houndstooth patterns and bold colors such as mustard yellow or avocado green.

4. Accessories

Accessorizing your space with mid century inspired elements is another fun way to infuse vintage vibes. Searching for antique mirrors with ornate frames that can serve as statement pieces on your walls, evoking a sense of grandeur. Decorative items like vintage clocks, ceramic vases, brass candlesticks, or retro radios can all enhance the nostalgic feel within your modern space. For my project, I ended up adding these wonderful shelving units to the client's living space.

5.Vintage Flooring

Incorporating vintage-inspired flooring can also be transformative. Opt for hardwood floors with intricate parquet patterns or consider retro-inspired tiles, like black and white checkerboard patterns or mosaic designs. Such flooring options instantly transport your interiors back in time and add a touch of sophistication.

Incorporating mid century styles is an exciting opportunity to infuse in your modern home with vintage vibes. You can also incorporate vintage furniture, lighting, wallpapers, fabrics, accessories, and flooring, you can create a unique and nostalgic ambiance that adds character and warmth to your space. Not to mention it can bring back memories of your grandparents living spaces as well.
